Enhance Breathing and Build Healthier Smiles with Airway Orthodontics in Tucson

How Airway Orthodontics Works

What Is Airway Orthodontics?

In a nutshell, Airway Orthodontics is primarily the EXPANSION of the upper jaw! If the upper jaw (maxilla) is too narrow, the nasal floor can also be narrower as a result, which can reduce nasal cavity volume.

One could also have a normal width of the upper jaw and resultant nasal passage but have teeth that point inward or toward the tongue, which can cause the tongue to naturally sit more toward the throat, encroaching on the oropharyngeal space, especially during sleep. In addition, this incisor relationship can prevent forward growth of the lower jaw (mandible), thereby compromising the oropharyngeal space as well.

Overdiagnoses

Despite what the mainstream media and many dentists and orthodontists tell you, not every child has an airway issue. In fact, only a small minority of kids have a true airway issue or sleep apnea. In most cases, I use an Expander to correct a bite issue or create more room for teeth, not because of a small airway. Any positive airway effects are secondary.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Airway Orthodontics?

Airway Orthodontics focuses on improving breathing and overall health by addressing the alignment of the teeth, jaws, and airway. Unlike traditional orthodontics, this approach looks at how your airway function affects facial growth, posture, and sleep quality.

Traditional orthodontics primarily focuses on straightening teeth. Airway Orthodontics goes beyond that by evaluating how jaw position and facial structure affect your ability to breathe properly, ensuring long-term health benefits alongside a great smile.

Both children and adults can benefit. For children, early intervention can guide healthy jaw development and prevent future airway problems. For adults, treatment can improve breathing, reduce sleep issues, and enhance facial balance.

Common symptoms include mouth breathing, snoring, poor sleep quality, chronic fatigue, morning headaches, and frequent nasal congestion. Some patients may also experience jaw discomfort, poor posture, or difficulty concentrating.

Yes. Airway Orthodontics can help reduce or eliminate mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea by improving airway structure, allowing better airflow during sleep.

Treatments may include specialized orthodontic appliances, palatal expansion, myofunctional therapy, and bite correction. Each plan is personalized to improve both dental alignment and airway function.

No, treatment typically uses gentle, gradual adjustments. Most patients experience minimal discomfort that subsides quickly as they adapt to the appliances.

Treatment length varies depending on the complexity of your case, but most patients complete their plan within 12–24 months. Your orthodontist will provide a clear timeline during your consultation.
